This Mating behaviors are well known and have been observed in a variety of snake species.  However in this case the photo you see here is a first documented case in the state of  Virginia.  I took this pic of the mating ball in the Fall of 2003 in some shrubs next to a house on Chestnut street Clifton, VA.
